Gastouni is the third most populated town in Elis and was once the capital of the prefecture. It was a very important agricultural and commercial center of the region. At one time, Gastouni was home to Frankish princes of Achaia and the region was called La Gastogne.
The glory of those days is recalled today by the impressive Byzantine-style church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which has an inscription indicating 1702 as the year of renovation.
Gastouni is a rural area, with vineyards, olive trees, fruit trees and vegetables. It has a notable commercial district and is only a few kilometers away from the idyllic beaches Glyfa and Arkoudi.
Sissinis House is also worth a visit; it is a beautiful neoclassical building that belonged to a very rich and respectable family, to the Monastery of Panagia Eleousa, and to the Folklore Museums of Vartholomio and Glyfa.
