Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos – Pyrgos
The Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Pyrgos, Ilia, is the metropolitan church of the city and has been designated as a "Monument of Modern Cultural Heritage". It is a typical example of ecclesiastical architecture of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with various neoclassical elements, both externally and internally, and is considered an important landmark for the history of the city of Pyrgos due to its architectural and archaeological value. The church was built in 1897 on the site of a pre-existing church, but it was inaugurated in 1906. It is a three-aisled basilica with two belfries to the west. The nave of the church, which is elevated compared to the side aisles, and it is covered with a saddleback wooden roof, while the lateral aisles have lean-to roofs. To the west is found the narthex with the central entrance. At the upper part of the narthex are two gynaeconites, placed at different levels. The interior decoration of the temple is dominated by marble.
