The historic Monastery of Fragkopidima is one of the most popular attractions in Ilia and not without reason. Probably founded in the early 14th century, it is located in the middle of the Pyrgos - Amaliada route and dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
Behind its name is an important story of a Frankish knight who chose to jump with his horse off the cliff rather than fall into the hands of the Saracens. According to tradition, before he fell, he prayed to Saint Nicholas and promised him that, if he was saved, he would build a church to honor him. Indeed, the knight survived the fall and immediately began work on the construction of the Church of Saint Nicholas.
The monastery complex is surrounded by large two-storey buildings housing cells, in which women nuns are accommodated. During their stay at the convent, they engage in various tasks, such as weaving on the loom. Their handiwork is famous all over Greece.
