Monastery of Virgin Dormition in Sepetos
The imposing monastery of Panagia of Sepetos is “hanging” on the rocks of mountainous Ilia. Although less well-known, it is one of the most impressive monasteries in Greece and is only a few kilometers away from the historic Andritsena.
The complex is built onto and into a vertical cliff and rises on five levels, housing cells and various auxiliary spaces. Along with its size and the way the monastery is built, its tower is also impressive, featuring a guesthouse where anyone seeking a retreat can stay.
Hundreds of people visit the hospitable monastery every year, which is a convent and is celebrated on August 23, while many believers travel from all over the country to venerate the miracle-working icon of Panagia Sepetiotissa (Virgin Mary of Sepetos).
