Agios Andreas Beach is one of the most cosmopolitan and historic beaches of Ilia. With rocks, clay soils, endless green and blue, we find it at the foot of Pontikokastro. The area had an important strategic role during the Byzantine and Medieval periods, as the Villeardouins built the magnificent Pontikokastro on the remains of the ancient acropolis.
In Pontikokastro, in the bay of Agios Andreas, one will also find Ancient Fia, which was an important port in ancient times. It was the second port of Ilia after Kyllini. During the Homeric years it was a fortress near the river Iardanos, while during the Peloponnesian War (second half of the 5th century BC) it was a base for the Athenians to attack Ilia. The port was lost in the sea during the strong earthquake of the 6th century AD, while the islets of Tigani and Korakas can still be seen from the bay of Agios Andreas. Shells from all periods have been found, from the Neolithic to the Roman period.
