Description

Katakolon is an idyllic, small settlement located on the north side of the Gulf of Kyparissia, 13 km from the capital of the prefecture of Elis, Pyrgos. The port of Pyrgos attracts a large number of visitors every year, especially during the summer months, while in 2022 alone, it welcomed 126 cruise ships with 123 thousand passengers.
In the center of the settlement is the Church of Agios Nikolaos, a chapel that stands out for its picturesque appearance, while at the edge of the peninsula of Katakolon is the Faros (lighthouse), which has been classified as a Preserved Historic Monument and is indeed impressive.
At a very short distance, on the idyllic mountain of Katakolon, behind the beautiful beach of Agios Andreas, are the ruins of Pontikokastro.
The castle was built in the 13th century by the Frank rulers of the Principality of Achaea on the acropolis of Archaia Feia, and was named Beauvoir, while it was also referred to as Belvedere. In the larger area, there was also Archaia Feia, the remains of which exist even today. In antiquity, it was one of the most important ports in Greece, while it is also mentioned in the Homeric epics.
Every four years, dozens of ships docked at Feia and unloaded the crowds of Greeks that visited the area to either participate in or watch the Olympic Games.
